We love teak wood. The teak tree (Tectona grandis) has its origin in the South Asian monsoon forests. When the Portuguese and the British came to India they met Kerala people which called this tree tekka (തേക്ക്) in their language Malayalam. So the Europeans as well called this tree „teca“ and „teak“. It is probably not a coincidence that this name refers etymologically to the Greek tékton (τέκτων) which means carpenter. Teakwood is one of the most important Asian export woods.
Nigra sum et formosa.
„I am black yet beautiful“ we read in the Biblical Song of Songs 1,5. Teakwood is black and beautiful too. Its hardness, its rough surface and its dark patina give teakwood a strong, dark, long-lasting appearance. Teak wood has a high density and contains natural oils which protect the wood against termites, woodworms and weathering. Those unique vintage pieces of furniture come from India and other Asian countries. They tell a unique story. Have a view on various colour layers and their dark patina which arose by years of intensive use.
